The Transcendence Triptych - 3 New Operas for Today
Bellissima Opera, a non-profit in Oak Park, IL, is launching a major project, The Transcendence Triptych, an operatic triple-bill celebrating individuals who transcended the racial divide. With this project, Bellissima intends to realize a profound and timely new work to add to the operatic repertoire.
Outside the Ring is based on the friendship that developed between the boxers German Max Schmeling and American Joe Louis after their fights in the 1930s. Reconciliation highlights an extraordinary act of forgiveness that occurred during The Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings following the end of apartheid in South Africa. Future Perfect draws its inspiration from workshops with Chicagoland youth on themes of diversity, interconnectedness and transcendence.
Heading the project is Bellissima’s Artistic Director Christine Steyer. She also wanted to provide a contemporary voice on the themes found in the first two operas by creating a third opera involving youth. Read here about our powerful day with students at Senn High School.
The operas’ scores will be the work of acclaimed composer David Shenton set to libretti by Steyer and Bellissima co-founder Paul Geiger. The Transcendence Triptych is still in its early stages of development. When sufficient funds are raised, the operas will be workshopped with a full production to follow using professional soloists, chorus, orchestra and dancers.
